Sebastian Cox Redefines Sustainability: From Golf Course to Wildlife Haven in Surrey
In a groundbreaking initiative, visionary designer Sebastian Cox has spearheaded the transformation of an 18-hole golf course and hotel in Surrey into a thriving sanctuary for native wildlife. Departing from the traditional model of manicured lawns and chemical treatments, Cox's rewilding project aims to restore the land to its natural state, allowing it to burst into life as a haven for biodiversity.
The once pristine fairways and greens have been replaced with a mosaic of different habitats, teeming with native flora and fauna. Cox's vision for the site goes beyond mere conservation; it's a radical reimagining of how human intervention can positively impact the environment. By introducing hardy, free-roaming cattle to the landscape, Cox not only adds to the abundance of wildlife but also enhances soil health through their natural fertilisation and disturbance activities, reminiscent of the ecological role played by woolly mammoths in ancient times.
"We wanted to create a space where nature could thrive, free from the constraints and chemicals of a traditional golf course," said Sebastian Cox. "By allowing the land to return to its natural state, we've seen an incredible resurgence of native wildlife, from birds and butterflies to small mammals and insects."
The rewilding project also extends to the hotel itself, where Cox has incorporated elements of the surrounding landscape into the design. Wood milled from the land has been used to create furniture for the 350 bedrooms, the restaurant, co-working spaces, and the welcome desks in the entrance, seamlessly blending the indoors with the outdoors.
"Our goal was to create a space that not only celebrates the beauty of the natural world but also invites guests to immerse themselves in it," added Cox. "From the moment they arrive, guests are greeted by the sights and sounds of the surrounding landscape, creating a truly unique and memorable experience."
The transformation of the golf course and hotel into a site of rewilding is a testament to Sebastian Cox's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By redefining the landscape and embracing the principles of rewilding, Cox has not only created a thriving habitat for native wildlife but also inspired others to rethink their relationship with the natural world.
